We also have some really great events coming up here at the house; Bunka bringing their take on a Roast, a cinema club, markets and perhaps even a firework or two. We’ll be sure to keep you posted each week as the events approach, but for now, if you’d like to see the line up and get some dates in your diary please head on over to our events page. See you soon!
Exhibition opening of paintings created between 1985-95 by local artist and neighbour Chris Chasey.
Chris took to recording his daily walks in paint on a huge industrial roll of paper, in his very small house… consequently, he was never able to view them all together. Instead, they were stashed one by one under his bed, where about sixty of them have remained, unscathed, for several decades…
Our kitchen crew will be serving up lunch (£12) too; Courgette fritters with green chilli jam, green beans in tomato sauce, pink fur apple potatoes with herb dressing, tomato salad with basil – all grown here at the Beacon.
Free Entry, Bar open (of course).
Coastal Currents – Open Studios 7th/8th September
The exhibition will open again the following weekend alongside our studios as part of this years Coastal Currents Arts Festival. More details to follow soon!
Exhibition curated by Caroline Gee and Judy Dewsbery.
Between 1985 and 1995, our St Mary’s Terrace neighbour Chris Chasey took to recording his daily walks in paint on a huge industrial roll of paper, in his very small house… consequently, he was never able to view them all together. Instead, they were stashed one by one under his bed, where about sixty of them have remained, unscathed, for several decades.
These large-scale works leap from the tough printer’s paper in an exuberation of colour; watercolour and gum arabic give depth and sheen.
This is just the tip of the iceberg of Chris’s amazing output. His paintings are often recognisably places we know, without being either realist or abstract: Dungeness, Rye Harbour, Winchelsea, Fairlight beach, Battle bonfire.
On show is our choice of fourteen of the large unframed paintings plus a further selection of framed works. The show opening takes place on Saturday 31st August 12pm-8pm, and will then will be open during Coastal Currents on 7th and 8th September 11am-6pm both days. Bar and kitchen open.
Coastal Currents 2024 7th & 8th September 11-6
Our studios are open for one weekend during this years Coastal Currents festival!
Come and meet the artists; F&B screen printing (pictured), DLR and Mastolf & Mastej, have a tour of the studios, see our exhibition (Chris Chasey – above) and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat, the weekends menu will be brought to you by Home Ground Kitchen.
Bunka’s third and final kitchen takeover (for now anyway), serving up an Asian inspired menu, seasonal cocktails and soft serve with a twist.
We will also have music from Bear & I bringing acoustic sounds to the garden, come and hear their fab version of Hastings anthem “Dirty Old Town” originally written by Ewan MacColl.
Finally, finish off your evening by seeing the firework display, marking the end of Old Town week, as they appear over the castle. Watch it from the comfort of our front garden with a drink if you like…
Last weekend we held our last Sunday – After providing many of you a weekly, home cooked and locally sourced traditional roast lunch each Sunday for almost a decade, we finally hung up our aprons. Its been great…and hard work…but we’ve loved it, as have most of you. Thanks to all that came to eat and drink with us, those that shared special events and celebrations or for being a regular, we appreciate you all. We’d also like to share a massive thank you to our Sunday team who showed up each week and worked long hours serving up each meal, dessert, starter and drink, we love our team!
But, its not the end! The Beacon will still sail on – We are here for your private events, parties and celebrations, workshops, talks and get togethers. Please do get in touch.
That being said, here’s whats coming up…
Friday 2nd August – The Others Story Telling Event
Back for another evening of story telling and sharing…
They’re back! If you missed their last take over here then there’s two new dates fast approaching, we highly recommend. Please get in touch with Bunka directly should you wish to book a table on either the 3rd or 10th August, also to see their final menu for either date.
Please join us for a very special event (afternoon and/or evening) raising funds for a very special local lad, Win, who is off to big school soon and needs a new set of wheels to get him there!
Sundays….
After almost a decade of Sunday roasting, our current team are hanging up their aprons and bidding farewell to the weekly raising of Yorkshire puddings, the 6am cuppa over a sack of spuds, the browning of the meat and the brewing of the gravies.
We’ve loved our Sunday service but it’s time to move on and let the elders put their feet up, although not entirely, there’s still the garden to maintain, the roof to fix and…the grandchildren. Besides, the OAP’s are open to catering the odd roast here or there for private hire.
The Beacon will still be very much available and running for hire; celebrations, music evenings, kitchen takeovers, away days and more…
Our Sunday roasts, however, will run only until the end of July…
We’re so very excited to have Bunka restaurant taking over our kitchens this Saturday, we recently visited them at Heist in St Leonards for a birthday and were really impressed with all that we ate and drank. There’s mention of screening the footy in a designated area too for those that do that….
Sunday (7th) Roast 12.30-4ish
We’ll be back in the kitchen to bring you your classic roast lunch too, space is very limited this week so please do call ahead and book your table…
local lamb, woodfired, minted redcurrant
Cashew nut roast, balsamic beetroot, sauteed leeks (v & ve)
Each served with Yorkshire pudding, roasties, seasonal vegetables and a home brewed gravy.
Desserts this week are raspberry & coconut sponge (ve) or chocolate tart, our weekly menu always includes starters and dishes for children.
Coming up soon!
A very special cause for a very special local lad…
Please note, this is one event but advertised as two because the afternoon is deemed to be more suitable for families and those with little people.
